About
My name is Janice Mead. I am a Registered Art Therapist (ATR), a Certified Therapeutic Meditation Process practitioner, a now-retired Licensed Professional Counselor specializing in trauma and addiction, and Professor of Art Therapy.
I bring lived life experience to this work—an understanding that comes not only from professional training, but from walking my own path through personal, profound suicide loss.
As an Art Therapist, I understand the power of art. Trauma research suggests that overwhelming experiences are often stored in the brain's sensory and nonverbal regions, making expressive approaches particularly valuable. Art making can create a container for nonverbal expression of grief.
I have been trained in Dr. Alan Wolfelt’s companioning philosophy for supporting suicide grief survivors. This approach deeply shaped my work because it honors grief as a natural human response to loss—not a problem to be solved.
I was introduced to the power of the guided Therapeutic Meditation Process through Tanya Stevens, who was previously an Occupational Therapist and is now a Mind-Body Healing Guide. She developed her method in her work with patients and used it to heal herself from Multiple Sclerosis. It is a mind-body healing approach that is currently used with trauma survivors. I have adapted the method to meet the emotional needs of suicide grief survivors.
The program I have developed for you consists of the elements that helped me heal from suicide loss. The elements most helpful were connection to compassionate presence, meditation to reconnect to lost parts of self, daily journaling, education about the suicide grief journey, and art making. Artistic expression makes the invisible visible, revealing the strengths one possesses to get through this life-altering experience.
This is an experience no one wanted, but I’m here to tell you, there is hope after suicide loss. You don’t have to travel this journey alone. As you move through this website, I explain my program in more detail. Please don’t hesitate to reach out if this seems like a good fit.
I wish you peace,
Janice
